Now there’s a choice of taxi services in Valley

Image submitted / Comox Valley Echo There’s a new phone number for taxi services in the Comox Valley with the start of competition for customers. For very many years, there has been only one taxi operator in the Valley, but recently that changed following an earlier BC Passenger Transportation Board (PTB) ruling that “healthy competition” would benefit customers. The PTB has granted a licence to local private-hire shuttle operator Ambassador Transportation Corporation to expand beyond its existing pre-booked services. Ambassador is now able to pick up people who hail or flag from the street, respond to immediate calls for service, and charge metered rates for journeys, while still offering pre-arranged journeys, tours and limo services at posted rates. Business owner Kevin East has put extra vehicles on the road that are freshly painted in his new black-and-yellow taxi livery and which promote the new phone number: 250-941-TAXI (8294). “Our two licensed taxis are actually seven-seat vans, one of them fully accessible for wheelchair users and scooters thanks to flip seats and a tail lift,” says East. “Whether it’s a taxi for one person or seven, we’re ready to respond - and with 14 licensed drivers we can offer round-the-clock service seven days a week.” The two super-cabs are both metered using rates fixed by the PTB. “Obviously traffic conditions impact the time taken for any journey, which is recorded by the meter,” says East. “But typically a Courtenay-Comox Valley Airport run is costing about $25.” With Ambassadors unique “hybrid” license they are able to utilize their shuttle vehicles and offer guests going to further points such as Port Alberni, Campbell River or...

Courtenay Rotary Club hosts first-ever beer fest

Posted Sep 24, 2014 at 12:00 PM There are 17 B.C. craft breweries scheduled to participate in the first-ever Courtenay Rotary Club Beer Fest, Oct. 3 at the Native Sons Hall. Proceeds of the event, which includes an industry trade show and public tasting, will go to fund further work on the Courtenay Train Station and the Rotary Trail, a popular downtown walking trail. The tasting is from 7-10 p.m., ages 19 and older. Tickets are $30 each, which includes a souvenir collector mason jar, 12 four-ounce tastings, and complimentary appetizers from Plates, Mad Chef, Butchers Block and Hot Chocolates & Cakebread. With each participating brewery bringing three or more beers and ciders for sampling, attendees can choose from over 50 different beers and ciders. Burgers will be available for purchase, as well as a safe ride home from Ambassador Shuttle Service by donation. Before the public tasting, the Beer Fest will feature an industry tasting and trade show from 4-6 p.m. where liquor outlets and restaurants/pubs can learn more about what makes these craft beers unique and enjoy complimentary appies. Elected as directors to two-year terms: •    Kevin East, Ambassador Shuttle Service; •    Mackenzie Gartside, Verico Select Mortgages; •    John Gower, Gower Design; •    Margaret Szafron, Prestige Video Transfer (re-elected). Nine candidates sought the four positions available. While Chamber officials counted ballots, Linda Oprica of Ascent Coaching led attendees in an engaging and entertaining networking exercise. Chamber members will have an opportunity to meet the full slate of board members at the annual general meeting April 18 at Crown Isle Resort.
